AdSense Ad Labeling Policy More Flexible?

As I was reading through the most recent AdSense Program Policies in order to update my book Uncommon AdSense, I noticed that the ad labeling policy appears to be more flexible. The previous policies contained language similar to this statement:

You may not label ads with text other than “Sponsored Links” or “Advertisements”.

The new policies say this:

Publishers … May not place misleading labels above Google ad units - for instance, ads may be labeled “Sponsored Links” but not “Favorite Sites”

This is not the unequivocal ban against using anything but “Advertisements” and “Sponsored Links” that was in the previous policies and gives publishers a bit more flexibility in labeling their ads, as long as they don't mislead visitors or encourage them to click the ads. To be safe, however, I've emailed the AdSense team to ask for clarification on this apparent policy change, so don't change your labels just yet. Stay tuned for more details.
